About the Event
What will you be doing at Crew & Learn? First and foremost, we've got a "crew chief" who will be there the entire time and knows the ropes. You will not be alone. The chief will keep you busy and point you in the right direction.
Next, the horse is first so crews do critical "horse stuff" - feeding, watering, mucking and grooming. Depending on the weather, possibly cooling horses with water, putting on blankets, or taking off butt rugs . Then comes caring for the rider/driver, feed and water them too; hold the horse so the rider can take take a potty break or change clothes. Going and getting stuff the rider/driver forgot in the trailer is also important.Â
Finally, there will also be plenty of time to watch what goes on at an event, like timing, vetting and how pulse/respiration works. You can ask questions about the different events going on and the rules. Get a feel for what kind of gear distance equestrians use and see how they feed and electrolyte horses. Most importantly, you must be willing to cheer with reckless abandon when your rider/driver crosses the finish line!!!! The same goes if you stay for the awards presentation; you must cheer. NO EXCEPTIONS.Â
Crews will be supporting FVDET competitors in these events:
- 25-mile rider on Sunday; approximately 6AM - 1PM
- 12-mile driver on Sunday; approximately 8AM - 12PM
- 12-mile novice rider on Sunday; approximately  8AM - 12PM
Sign up to help for a portion of any day, or come and camp overnight! You may even want to bring your own horse for trail riding at your leisure - yes, trails are open to the public during events. Nobody minds if you trail ride at a distance event to get your horse experience with the sights and sounds. You must make your own campsite reservation at https://wisconsin.goingtocamp.com if you want to bring a horse.
